DFI.SYS
The DFI.SYS driver supports the DFI 2000, DFI 3000 and the DFI 3000 PLUS
hand scanners.
DFI.SYS allows the DFI 3000 and the DFI 3000 PLUS to use four resolutions,
400, 300, 200, and 100 dpi. The DFI 2000 only supports 200 dpi.
Here are some examples of the switches available to configure DFI.SYS to
different computer environments.
DFI 3000 (default) 'device=dfi.sys'
DFI 2000 'device=dfi.sys /A'
Micro Channel Adapter 'device=dfi.sys /M'
DFI 3000 Plus 'device=dfi.sys /P'
While this driver was primarily designed for use under Windows, it works well
in either Publishers or Plus, as long as there is EMS available. The scanner
driver automatically recognizes the type of EMS available and displays what
it finds at boot time, so the /W option has been removed.
DFI.SYS will work without EMS, but in a restricted manner. The scanned image
must be reduced in size. For instance, on most 640 K machines, typical scanned
images sizes are:
Resolution Image Size DOS Memory Used
200 DPI 4" X 6" 120K
300 DPI 4" X 3" 120K
400 DPI 4" X 1.5" 120K
Always use a 2 color mode when scanning in images, since the scanner only
provides black and white information. This will leave more DOS ram free to
scan into.
The '/M' switch is for the DFI Micro-Channel interface.
If the driver doesn't work or a bad image is scanned in, check for
interference from a printer port setup for LPT2.
Be sure that Paintbrush and the switches on the Handy Scanner are set for
the same resolution, or else there will be garbage included on the side of
your scanned image.
Image quality is very dependent on scanning speed. Scanning too fast will
squash the image. The DFI 3000 PLUS has a scan over-run light, that goes out
if you are scanning too fast. With PaintBrush, you can stop scanning, release
the scan switch momentarily and the over-run light will come back on.
LIMITATIONS:
THIS DRIVER IS GAMMA RELEASE LEVEL. THIS MEANS THAT IT WORKS WELL ENOUGH TO
PASS OUR TESTING DEPARTMENT; HOWEVER, WITH THE MYRIAD OF PC HARDWARE
AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET TODAY, THERE MAY BE SOME PROBLEMS REMAINING.
WE DO KNOW THAT THIS DRIVER (VERSION 4.01) CAN PRODUCE SEAMLESS IMAGES WITH
EMS (LIM 4.0 SPEC.) AND 'AT' CLASS COMPUTERS.
